Glitter and Vinyl Minecraft Ornament for Christmas

One of my family’s Christmas traditions is the addition of a meaningful Christmas ornament to each child’s ornament collection every year.  I have a great collection of ornaments that date back to the year I was born, and when my boys move out and start their own families, their ornament collections will go to their new homes to decorate their own Christmas Tree.  (My mom has on her own tree an ornament made each year by my grandmother that she was a child.) The Big One has an extensive ornament collection that includes the Steelers (his favorite team), Zoo Animals, and Harry Potter— all favorites during particular stages of his life.  The Little Monkey just has his “My First Christmas” ornaments, but it’s time to grow his collection.  Using my cutting machine (one can use either a Silhouette or Cricut machine), I decided to create some easy glitter and vinyl ornaments that featured special firsts for my boys.  We just went to see Santa, and had our Little Monkey cry hysterically, so I made a Santa ornament for him.  For the Big One I made a special Minecraft ornament.  He’s obsessed with Minecraft right now.
Older school-aged children, tweens and teens love Minecraft. It's an fun computer game that is enjoyed by so many boys and girls. I wanted to create a special Minecraft ornament for my son, and using a clear cube ornament, glitter and vinyl, I created an easy DIY Minecraft creeper ornament. I also show how to use the technique to create a Santa Belt ornament. This works great with any cutting machine, either a Cricut or Silhouette. A Free Cut File for the Creeper is included in the post so you can make your very own Easy Glitter and Vinyl Minecraft Ornament for your Christmas tree.

Now, the first thing I did was use plastic ornaments. and using Pledge Floor Care Multi surface, and ultra-fine glitter, and coated two ornaments for the boys.  I used the square/cube ornament and green glitter for the Big One’s Minecraft ornament, and a flat disc circle for the Little Monkey’s Santa ornament.

I wasn’t entirely sure how to make the glitter ornaments, so I made a little Vlog of me doing the second one.  It’s really, REALLY easy, and they look gorgeous. (Sorry my voice sounds so scratchy, I’m getting over a cold right now!)

After you’ve coated the ornaments with glitter, let them dry, and get to working on your vinyl patterns.  This tutorial is originally created for the Silhouette Machine, but the same principles can be used for the Cricut.

I needed to make one for the Creeper Minecraft image.  When I looked closely, I realized it was a pattern of squares and rectangles, so I started by making two 1 inch squares for eyes, and I separated them by 1″ using the grid.  I then made the middle rectangle that was 1.5 inches long and 1 inch wide, and moved it below and between the two 1 inch squares.  Finally, I made 2 identical smaller rectangles that were 0.5 inches wide, and 1.5 inches long.  I put these on either size of the larger rectangle, a half an inch down.  The pattern looked something like this:

Once everything was lined up correctly, I turned off the grid, and needed to change the cut settings.  If you don’t do this, you’ll end up with 2 square, and 3 rectangles, instead of the face.  (Even if the cut file, the eyes/squares will be completely detached from the rest of the face.)  You need to go in to the cut style, and change the setting to “cut edge.”  When you do this, the 3 rectangles will be cut as a single shape.

Now, in case you want to use this Creeper pattern for yourself, I have attached a free cut file that you can access here(You can also get to the file by clicking the image. Please link back to this post, if you use the cut file in a blog post.)  I also used the Minecrafter Font that I got at dafont.com.  It’s a free font based on the font used in the game. Since I always date the boys’ ornaments, I used this to make a Minecraft date on the ornament.

Now the actual design is a 3 inch square, which would be quite large on my ornament.  I actually decreased the overall size of my pattern, making it a 1.5 inch square.  After I cut the pattern from the Vinyl (again the cut file is here), I weeded it, and using Transfer Paper adhered the Creeper face and date to two sides of the ornament.

I did a very similar thing with the Santa ornament.  First, I want to say that the Santa belt idea is not new.  I’ve seen lots of variations of it.  Try doing a Pinterest search of “Santa Belt Ornament” and you’ll see what I mean.  I made this design by creating a long thin rectangle in black for the belt.  It was 0.4 inches wide and 8 inches long.  I then used a rounded square within a rounded square to create the belt buckle.  I also used a celebratory font to create the “2013.”  The belt was cut in black vinyl, and I actually cut it out at the same time, with the Minecraft pattern.  I then cut the date and the buckle out in gold vinyl.

Note that I used my leftover scraps of vinyl with my cutting mat to create both ornaments.  This is a great way to use up the little pieces of vinyl.

Now, for attaching the long thin belt rectangle, I did not use the transfer paper.  I actually did it slowly by hand to make sure that I positioned the belt evenly across the ornament, so that I could put the date between the ends of the black vinyl.  I did use transfer paper to attach the buckle and date to the ornament.

Now the boys each have their own handmade ornament for the year.  The Big One was very impressed with his Minecraft ornament and couldn’t believe that I could make the pattern all by myself!

  12. Emily, your video is fantastic! I had no idea how easy it was to glitterize the inside of an ornament! I’m DEFINITELY trying this in the future. Also, your two ornaments turned out beautifully. So professional. (Don’t you love how the Silhouette allows us to create such top-notch creations?) Okay, now I need to go on YouTube and see what this whole Minecraft craze is. I’m totally out of the loop! Ha ha.

Thanks for participating in this month’s Challenge and for bringing your A game with this creation (as always).

  13. Hi, awesome Minecraft ornament! I too started a Christmas ornament collection for our daughter’s 8 and 9. We adopted our oldest mid 2014 so her first was a “1st Christmas” she’s very much into Minecraft and I’d absolutely love for this one to be her 2015 ornament.
Can I purchase one from you? I’ve looked through Etsy and Artfire this one is just perfect because it’s a cube. Please let me know if that’s possible.

    Thanks,
    Wendy (gamer girls mom)

    • Actually, I don’t have any of the ornaments remaining, but I would guess they are still available at Michael’s. If you are really interested, I can check when I run to the store later this week. I would love to help you, but unfortunately I think it would probably be cost prohibitive for you to have me make one.

  14. These are so cute! I have three Minecraft fans here. I’ve used the floor cleaner and glitter to coat an ornament before but never though to make it into a creeper.

  15. These are great! I have a Minecraft fan roaming around my house as well, and that Santa is super cute. I love the sparkly red glitter <3 I don't have a cutter, but I might try them out just hand-painting. I can always get sticker numbers for the year.

  16. Love these ornaments! Thank for sharing your tutorial at Motivation Monday on Mom Home Guide!

I wish I had a printer I really like the red Santa belt ones. I definitely can’t paint belt on and it be nice and neat.

  18. Kelly Wessel says:

Your ornaments are adorable – I hope I will have time to make some this year as my 3 son’s would love it! I am trying to follow your instructions on the silhouette. I have a new-to-me Cameo and I don’t know the ins-and-outs yet. I made the image with no problem, chose cut edge, but it still cuts out the 3 rectangles and 2 squares. Any advice for the novice/beginner? I also tried downloading your cut file, but my computer says I don’t have the right app to do that. 🙁 I am frustrated and have been trying to work on this all week for my son’s birthday party this weekend and was so excited when I came across your blog post last night. I appreciate any help!! Thanks, Kelly
