It’s nearly Valentine’s Day. Are you ready? Have you gotten something special for your husband/boyfriend/partner? I want to share with you a way that I personalized a paper mache wine canister for Mellow Man. I used an Alice in Wonderland theme to decorate it. He has a special affinity for the story Alice in Wonderland. In fact, on one of our date nights, we went to see the Johnny Depp Alice in Wonderland movie. Plus, we had an Alice in Wonderland themed wedding. It’s a special connection for the two of us. I had so much fun making this for him. I gathered together all of the Alice in Wonderland supplies that I could think of, a bottle of Mod Podge, craft paint and some paint brushes. The best part of decoupaging mixed media is the freedom to play, allowing me to create the perfect Alice in Wonderland Wine Canister.
I didn’t actually plan on sharing the final project, but Mellow Man asked me when I was going to put in on the blog, so I don’t actually have in process pictures. The canister had twine, and I removed it, as it didn’t really go with the design I wanted. I started by painting the entire paper mache canister red. While the paint was drying, I looked through all of the pieces of scrapbook paper that I had gathered and ripped them into pieces. When the paint was dry, I covered the entire canister with mod podge, and started adding paper. And I took some paper away too. I kept working on it until it felt right.
I also dry brushed with a coarse brush, a very light coat of silver paint. Then I put another coat of mod podge all over it to allow it to dry. I had a bunch of ephemera that I had gathered to go with the theme. I had cut outs of watches and clocks, to remind me of the rabbit. I had some charms, buttons, a felt heart, playing cards, and even some photocopies of illustrations from Alice in Wonderland.
I had a little tiny glass vial, and I filled it with water and red dye. I took a blank shipping tag, and stamped “Drink Me.” I really liked that sentiment for a gift that included a bottle of wine. I found a dark red ribbon and strung and knotted that into the handle to replace the twine I had removed. The last step was to attach the “Drink Me” tag and vial to the ribbon handle.
I really am satisfied with how the project turned out, and I am even more pleased with how much Mellow Man loved it. I think I should do some more decoupaging! What are you making for your sweetie for Valentine’s Day this year?
