Peter Cottontail Door Hanger

It’s almost Easter, and Peter Cottontail is on his way to our house!  Did you used to sing that song when you were a child?  It reminds me so much of wonderful Easters as a child– time with my family, in church wearing smocked dresses, gloves and sunhats.  Then we would gather together as a family, eating a wonderful meal.  There is much anticipation this Easter week, as we honor the Last Supper on Maundy Thursday (one of my very favorite Church services), mourn on Good Friday, wait in anticipate for the resurrection on Easter Saturday, and wonder in awe on Easter.  It is a meaningful week, and somehow the Easter Bunny, AKA Peter Cottontail gets worked into the festivities!  Regardless, the excitement of Easter Egg hunts and the arrival of that bunny are overlaid this week.  If you are waiting for Peter Cottontail, then I have a door hanger for you!  It’s a quick and easy project with vinyl and your favorite (AKA Silhouette!) vinyl cutting tool!

My Mom Made That: Peter Cottontail Door Hanger

This project didn’t take very long, and requires only a wooden (or paper mache) door hanger, paint in your favorite Easter color, two colors of vinyl and a cotton ball.My Mom Made That: Peter Cottontail Door Hanger

First I painted my door hanger.  I used a Martha Stewart Pearl paint, as I love the shimmery, iridescent appearance of the paint.  I also only put on two light coats.  I did this because I really liked the appearance of the wood grain on the door hanger.  If I had wanted to get rid of the grain, I would have probably needed several more coats of paint.

My Mom Made That: Peter Cottontail Door HangerThe next step was to cut out a bunny image that I found on the Silhouette Online Store.  I didn’t cut out the tail though, as I was going to use a cotton ball.  If you didn’t want to use a cotton ball, you could cut the design for the tail out.  I used dark brown, as I thought that the blue wouldn’t allow for a grey bunny.  I think that if I painted the door hanger pink, I’d have used the grey vinyl instead. I then cut out the the phrase “Here come Peter Cottontail,” in pink.

The last step is to simply take a small cotton ball and glue it to the tail location on the bunny’s back.  I used (and really like) Aleene’s Fast Grab Tacky Glue because it really does result in a quick hold.  (I’m not connected to the brand at all, just like this particular product.  The link is an affliate link.)  I let the glue dry and the project is done!
