I have lost count of all of the colds that my Littles have had this year. Too many to count, and it’s just now becoming the peak cold season. My pediatrician told me that young children average 14 colds a year. Fourteen… and if each cold lasts approximately a week, that means that 14 weeks a year my Little Boys will be sick. And when the are several Littles, germs are shared and colds last longer and work their way through a family. No wonder it feels like someone is always sick in our house– it’s probably true! This means that we go through a lot of the standard cold supplies around here, especially Kleenex, meaning we have them in every room, and we need to buy them in bulk. However, I’ve decided that there isn’t a reason that they can’t look festive for this holiday season. Since the holidays are right in the middle of cold and flu season, I felt that spreading a little holiday cheer with a festive Kleenex box would be a great decoration, as well as something to share with friends and family.
This project takes only a few minutes, and is so easy to do; however, it is very versatile, and allows the already festive Kleenex Holiday Boxes to bring an even more special touch to your home or office. With the large Winter Care Kit that I picked up at Sam’s Club, I was able to make a variety of boxes of Kleenex for my own home, as well as make up a few for family. My sister-in-law has one on her desk at work, as does Mellow Man. And while the Winter Care pack has holiday designs, this project is flexible enough to allow each box to be customized to your own holiday decorating needs.
All you need to make the decorated boxes are a box of Kleenex, Glue Dots, two types of complementary ribbons (1 thicker and 1 thinner), preferably wired ribbon, a decorative sticker, decal, or flat ornament, and scissors.
First wrap the thicker ribbon around the Kleenex box. Notice that my picture above uses a very thick burlap ribbon, which covers the entire box. This works great if you have a specific holiday decor that you are going for and the winter designs of the Kleenex boxes aren’t a perfect fit. Or, with the more playful and less traditional Christmas colors of the green box, I used thinner ribbons and let the green design of the box add to the decoration.
After you have measured the ribbon and cut it to slightly longer than the box, you are going to adhere it to the Kleenex Box. For the wired polka-dotted ribbon, I folded both ends of the ribbons under to make smoother edges. For the burlap ribbon, I tried to cut carefully along the same row of the weave. I then generously positioned glue dots along the center of the Kleenex box, and securely fastened the ends together with the Glue Dots.
I repeated the process for the thinner ribbon, positioning it in the middle of the thicker ribbon. I then positioned the sticker (or wooden ornament) in the center of the design and adhered it with the provided adhesive and an extra Glue Dot or two.
Again, it took less than 10 minutes to create a colorful, decorative Kleenex box that helps spread a little cheer during the holidays. This decoration won’t take up any more room on an office desk or coffee table, as we already have Kleenex Boxes in those places.
For this project, I was able to utilize the Kleenex Winter Pack that included 3 perfect fit Winter canisters and 8 lotion boxes. It was available at Sam’s Club and retails for $15.96 per pack. For little noses, the Lotion Kleenex are great because they are extra thick and absorbant, but also very soothing (they have Aloe Vera and Vitamin E in each tissue). If you aren’t sure what the Kleenex Perfect Fit tissues are, they are the 3 more cylindrical containers that are upright boxes that are the right size for small spaces.
How can you spread a little holiday cheer during these upcoming winter months?
