Homemade Shaving Cream for Men

Since Christmas, I’ve been having so much fun making body washes and sugar scrubs for my family and friends who are women.  About two months ago, the Mellow Man started complaining that his shaving cream was irritating his skin.  I got to thinking– All of the basic recipes for body wash, deodorant, and skin care can be used by men; however, men are likely to prefer something less floral and feminine.  That just means that you need to select a masculine blend of essential oils to make your homemade shaving cream.   There are a few resources for creating masculine blends of essential oils, and you may want to experiment on your own to make the perfect blend for your own homemade shaving cream, but I’m going to share the blend that I created.

Now, I experimented to make sure that I got a blend that Mellow Man and I would both like. I started following the 30-50-20 rule for the Top, Middle and Base notes of the three oils.  I used Sweet Orange as my top note, Bay as my middle note, and Patchouli as my base note.  However, I found that I had to tinker a bit more to get it smelling the way that I liked.  I ended up using a 5:7:3 blend of the three scents.  However, if you’d like to tinker with your own blend with these three essential oils, I think the 30-50-20 rule is a good place to start!

Start by adding the three essential oils into the teaspoon of Vitamin E Oil, and set the oil blend aside.  (I use these pipettes for measuring my essential oils when blending.)  Then you need to melt your shea butter and coconut oil over a double boiler on the stove.  They don’t take very long to melt, but allow them to melt completely, and then remove them from heat.  (I guess you could do this without a double boiler, but I’d be concerned about the oil burning.  If you try that route, be very careful.)

While the two oils are melted and in liquid form, gently whisk in the Castille Soap, Avocado and Jojoba oils.  Now, there isn’t any reason that one couldn’t use any of the basic carrier oils for this recipe.  I am going to explain how I selected Avocado and Jojoba oils.  Jojoba oil is not an oil, but a liquid plant wax.  It is good for dry and sensitive skin, and is reported to have anti-inflammatory properties.  Of all of the commonly used carrier oils, it is supposed to be most like our own natural skin oils.  For the Mellow Man, whose skin has been extremely dry and irritated, I felt that this carrier oil was a wise choice.  Now Avocado oil is supposed to be an extremely nourishing oil that is easily absorbed by the skin.  It is wonderful for extremely dry and sensitive skin, and provided deep hydration.  However, it can be a little intense by itself, so I thought I would blend it with the jojoba oil.

Put the whisked ingredients into the refrigerator and allow them to harden again.  It took about 90 minutes for them to get the right consistency for me.  Then you’ll whip the ingredients with your handheld or standing mixer for about 3 minutes, until the mixture is blended and softened.  It’s not really a froth like regular shaving cream or when you mix whipping cream.  However, the blending will change the consistency of the hardening oils and made them softer and easy to apply to the face.  This recipe made slightly more than one mason jar worth of shaving cream.

If you made this, realize that it’s not like the shaving cream in the can that you buy at the store– it’s denser, creamier and much more moisturizing.  It’s a blend with a lot of oil and moisture, and will definitely soften your skin!

Give it a try, and let me know what you think!
