Well, it’s less than a month from Valentine’s Day, and with the last of the Christmas decor safely secured on our basement storage shelves, Mellow Man brought up our Valentine’s Day decorations.  Of course, I’ve got to make new ones every year, to spice things up!  I’ve had a red and white candle sitting in my craft box, waiting to decorate.  I picked them up for about a dollar a piece, and I finally got a chance to spice things up using the Silhouette Portrait.  I got out the messy fun glitter, and tried out some double-sided adhesive from Silhouette America.  In less than 30 minutes, I had 3 colorful and sparkly Glitter Valentine’s Day Candles!

I first selected my designs, approximately sized them, and then printed samples out onto white cardstock.  I did this to make sure that I got everything sized just right to fit onto the candles.  I didn’t want to waste any of the double-sided adhesive paper.  I’ve learned that having paper versions of the images helps me to place cut samples, rather than simply using the program.

Once everything looked just right, I cut the three designs onto the double-sided adhesive.  I then placed them onto the three candles.  I removed the adhesive, and sprinkled pink, red or silver super fine glitter onto the design.  This part is kind of messy, and I did it over a lipped plate.  (Somewhere in my supplies, I have a glitter tray, but I couldn’t easily find it– doesn’t always seem to be that way!)

The hardest part of this project was making sure that I removed the yellow backing without the sticky material, so that I could place the design correctly onto the candles.  It’s helpful if you have some pointed craft tweezers, long finger nails, and a lot of patience.  I messed it up the first time, and had to redo the “L” in the love candle.

I brushed away the excess glitter with a soft, clean paint brush.  This in the directions on the back of the double-sided adhesive.  It does take a bit of time to get all of the small, extra bits of glitter off the candle.  The texture of the candle is porous, and the glitter seems to want to stick to it!  You can see from these individual close-ups that there are bits of extra glitter on them.

Regardless, these Glitter Valentine’s Day Candles were such a quick and easy craft to make with candles that I had been wanting to decorate.
