Thank you to Great Clips for sponsoring today’s discussion and inspiring my family to support teachers!

This week I got an email from our civic association. They were asking families to donate backpacks that were filled with new school supplies like pencils, markers, crayons, folders and notebooks.  I was a little surprised by this drive that was coordinated by our neighborhood and the Big One’s elementary school.  Most of the kiddos at the school don’t seem to be lacking, and I know the PTA has a healthy budget to support a bevy of extracurricular programs at the school.  Why was the neighborhood trying to collect 100 backpacks filled with school supplies for children?  It turns out in our wonderful little school, that has a great PTA and lots of kids who seem to have plenty that a third don’t have enough to buy the necessary school supplies.  Who picks up the slack– it’s usually the teachers. I assume.  Those teachers, who don’t make nearly enough for all that they do, spend their own money to make sure the classroom has what it needs to run!

Apparently the average teacher spends $1000 or more on school supplies for students during each school year.  School supplies for your children, my children!  Well, I thought I would share a little printable that I made for us to use to start the school year off right.  To let the teachers know that we’ve got their back!  It’s a small 3×5 card that I can tape to the top of a package of paper, or tied to a bundle of pencils or pens.   I’d rather my sons’ teachers be focused on teaching my sweet boys than worrying about getting more supplies.  I want them to feel appreciated!  (If you’d like to use this printable, just click on the picture above, as I’ve saved in a full size image).

I’d like to share another group that is trying to help teachers with the burden of buying school supplies.  Great Clips is the world’s largest salon brand  with over 3300 salons throughout the United States and Canada.  If you click the picture above, you’ll be taken to a page to watch a video of a classroom makeover and see how Great Clips has already fulfilled two teachers’ classroom wish lists. In order to help other teachers throughout the U.S. and Canada, for every person who downloads  the Online Check-In app, Great Clips will contribute to (up to $20,000) to help continue to support teachers and students.   What is the Online Check-In app?  Itlets you add your name to the waiting list at your local Great Clips salon. It’s not an appointment – what it does is let you add your name to the list before arriving at the salon to help save you time.  We take the Big One to Great Clips fairly frequently to get his shaggy mane trimmed.  It’s great to know that you can get “call-ahead” seating when go, particularly when you are rushing around to get ready for the start of the school year.

This year Great Clips is also  hosting a contest to send $100 worth of school supplies to your door.  Think about how much your teachers would appreciate all those pencils!  To enter the #GREATLIST contest, go here.  Every day, one lucky winner will get their school supplies bought and shipped to their front door for free!   Plus #GREATLIST contest entrants receive a $2-off Great Clips coupon with their confirmation email the first time they submit a school supply list.  The contest has already started, and is running until September 5th, 2014.  Be sure to enter!
