I know that breakfast is supposed to be the most important meal of the day.  Really, I do.  Theoretically, it should be a simple thing to do– plan an easy meal with healthy ingredients to kickstart your family’s day.  However, for some reason, breakfast in our house always seems to be frantic and last minute and sometimes even involves yelling.  I have the strange kiddos that don’t seem to like eating in the morning, but they do like sleeping.  All of them.  I’ve never had children who wakes up at 5am  (thank goodness), but I do have children that struggle to get up in time for school, camp, preschool, church…  This makes our mornings harried.

My Mom Made That: Simple Ingredients for a Successful Breakfast

I know families who serve hot meals for breakfast, every day.  I suppose that some even eat together for breakfast.  (Or at least that happens in the commercials.  I’m not sure I know of anyone who really does that.  Do you?)  We are NOT that family.

I’m the mom who is begging and pleading with my sweet Monkey to eat his grapes while we are in the carpool line.

I’m the mom who is trying to get anything other than coffee and a little bowl of cereal into my tween’s tummy.  (The coffee trend is new, and one that I don’t like giving into.  Sadly, he has learned how to brew his own!)

Mellow Man doesn’t eat breakfast, and I often forget– until I’m starving and I overeat.

Please tell me that some of you can relate.

Well, Nature Valley asked me to test out their Simple Nut Bars and tell you about them.  I’m not a “crunchy” mama.  Let’s be real.  I’m a gluten-loving, butter-using, home-cooking mama.  However, I thought the flavors of the Simple Nut Bars sounded pretty good: Almond Cashew Sea Salt and Roasted Peanut Honey.  I do like sweetened peanuts and almonds.  The Mellow Man loves cashews.  And better snacking and breakfast habits are something that we are trying to work on.

Here’s the thing.  These bars make eating on the go easy.  I grabbed on the other day while I was driving the boys around in my Mom Van, and found them to be pretty filling.  (I also didn’t hate myself the way I do when I do the drive through and grab a doughnut.)

I’d love for you to try them out and see what you thing of the Simple Nut Bars.  In fact, here’s a $0.75 off coupon for one of the bars.

Now, if I don’t want to grab them as I’m running out of the door (as I do most mornings), I’ve found that with a little yogurt and dried fruit, I can have a simple, and healthy breakfast.

In fact, it reminds me of the breakfasts we had while we were in Turkey.  (Did you know that Yogurt is a Turkish word, and the Yogurt there is so much better than any brand we have here in the United States? Yum! My mouth is watering thinking about it!)

If you’d like to make this healthy, simple and complete breakfast all you need is:

  1. A Simple Nut Nature Valley Bar
  2. Dried Fruit
  3. Greek Yogurt (plain or vanilla, I used plain)

All you have to do it top your yogurt with your crumbled Simple Nut bar, and a sprinkling of dried fruit and enjoy.  You are having a simple, delicious breakfast meal with fresh, healthy ingredients.  (Definitely better for my tummy than that doughnut.)
