Do you remember that commercial from years ago about the mom who was pretending to work hard in her kitchen to make her family cereal treats? My mother didn’t make cereal treats when I was little. We were more of a cookie family. However, I know plenty of kids who brought them to school for parties, and had plenty of opportunities to eat them as a tasty snack. That means that I didn’t know two things– #1) How easy it is to make cereal treats; #2) How versatile the recipe is! You can make cereal treats with any cereal, and they are almost always delicious! Given all of the great Cheerios flavors that are available right now, there are many different options for you cereal treats by using Cheerios. Today I am going to show you two ways to make Cheerios Cereal Treats that combine chocolate and peanut butter! What flavors are more iconiclly perfect matches than Chocolate and Peanut Butter.
To make these Cheerios treats, you need a box of either Multi Grain Dark Chocolate Crunch Cheerios or Multi Grain Peanut Butter Cheerios. While you are at the store, pick up a bag of mini marshmallows, either chocolate or peanut butter chips, and some unsalted butter.
- One 10oz Bag of Mini Marshmallows
- 3 Tablespoons Unsalted Butter
- 5 Cups of Cheerios (either Peanut Butter or Chocolate Crunch Multi Grain Cheerios)
- 1/2 Bag (approximately 6 oz) of either Peanut Butter or Chocolate Chips (the opposite of the Cheerios flavor you selected)
What I love about cereal treats is the fact that you (or your school-aged child) can make this snack food in under 30 minutes. Given how easy the Cheerios treats are, there is no reason not to make both varieties with the two boxes of cereals.
You will first need to take a baking pan or pyrex dish and grease it with butter. Use butter, don’t use Pam as it affects the taste. take the bag or marshmallows and pour it into a large microwave safe bowl. Then add chunks of your 3 tablespoons of butter. Microwave for 90 seconds. Take the mixture out of the microwave and stir it up. Microwave the mixture for another minute to 90 seconds. Stir well until the melted butter and marshmallows are well mixed. Pour in the cereal and stir with wooden spoon or spatula. Once the mixture is well blended, dump the cereal/butter/marshmallows into your buttered dish. Pat the mixture down, and once it has cooled (after a few minutes in the dish), pour the chips on top. If you pour the chips in too soon, they will melt. (See the slightly melted chocolate chips above?) Pat the chips into place. Stick the treats into the fridge for 30 minutes or so to harden and set before cutting.
Thus, with the same recipe you can either have Peanut Butter Cheerios Treats with chocolate chips, or Chocolate Crunch Cheerios treats with Peanut Butter Chips. Yum! The Big One shared that he liked the richer Peanut Butter flavor of the Chocolate Crunch Cheerios with the Peanut Butter chips, but the choice is up to you. Which one sounds the best to you?
