I read this week that having three kids is supposed to be the most challenging number of children to have because it’s the first time that the parents are outnumbered. I can’t speak to that, as I’ve never gone from three to four children. I can speak to the fact that each pregnancy takes a bit more of a toll on my body.  It’s not the actual time being pregnant, rather it’s the time afterward.  I always have to go to the bathroom now– I’m not sure if my bladder got smaller, but I think I’ve just developed a “mommy bladder.”  At least that is what one bloggy friend told me recently at a meeting… after I made the mad dash to the bathroom for the third time.  Now I carry my unmentionables in my purse, and to give myself a bit more privacy when my children go rummaging through my purse and toss things aside.  As you probably know from a few prior posts, I find working with felt to be easy, particularly for simple embroidery and piecing.  So, I decided to make an easy hedgehog felt pouch that was the perfect size for my Poise liners (as well as period liners when necessary!)

This little felt pouch was very easy, and other than the one bigger piece of felt, was a perfect way to use up some of my scraps of wool felt.  (Again, based on recommendations by more experienced felt crafters, like Nancy, over at Small Things with Love, I work with felt that is primarily Wool felt, rather than the acrylic crafting felt that you can buy at your local craft store.  It’s so much more luxurious to work with!)

I used a liner to measure how big the pouch ought to be, you could also use a credit card, and then I cut a piece of felt to fit that size.  I then blanket stitched around all edges of the pouch, crafted a button hole, and sewed a button onto the back of the pouch.  (For help with the blanket stitch, you can see this tutorial.)

My felt pouch for my Poise liners can easily hold between 3 and 4 panty liners.

Maybe I shouldn’t be uncomfortable, and shouldn’t need a privacy pouch for my liners, but the reality is that a large number of women who are younger and who have given birth to multiple children experience Light Bladder Leakage (LBL).  Carrying babies around for 40 weeks puts a lot of pressure on the the bladder.  I know that you moms know what I’m talking about, and that leaves us uncomfortable or worried that we’ll experience when we are out in public.  What happens if you sneeze too hard, or laugh too long?

A lot of times, we girls resort to using period pads and liners because we are expected to have them in our purse. It’s less embarrassing that needing a product designed to manage LBL. That being said, LBL isn’t the same as a period.  It’s just not, and a period pad just isn’t designed to deal with LBL.  Poise liners are! And while I do carry them in my purse, I don’t think the average person would really know that they are different.  (The Hedgehog pouch was just because I know my kids’ toss things out of my purse when they start looking for things, and having any kind of panty liner flying around can be embarrassing.)

Do you love Hedgehogs?  Have you heard about Light Bladder Leakage before?  Did you know that it is a very common occurrence in mothers?
