Who eats snacks in the car?  Who lets their kids eat in the car?  I mean honestly, my “Mommy-van” is covered in crumbs.  (And sand.  Lots and lots of sand, so much so that I am honestly shocked that there is any left in the sandbox at preschool.)   The snack that we eat on the playground and the car are usually Goldfish, and I know that my Monkey and Peanut aren’t the only Goldfish cracker lovers out there.  When the Monkey had to pick his snack foods for preschool, he usually said that he wanted to take Goldfish to share with this friends.  And his class mascot is a Dolphin, so using my Cricut Explore, the two of us created a very special Goldfish Snack Tote that has his “Dolphin School” mascot on it.  Since we found that it was a great mommy-son project, I thought I’d share this tutorial for making your very own Goldfish Snack Tote.

I’ve been trying to find activities that promote the Monkey’s fine motor skills, and when I was a little girl, I remember having to practice with lacing cards. I thought that Fun Foam would be a good product to use, as it is touch enough for a child in Pre-K to man-handle a bit, but also not too hard to punch holes in.  I want to give you some suggestions about how to make this awesome Goldfish snack tote using your Cricut because my kiddos and I had such fun making this together.  All you need to make this are the following items:

I used the dolphin design that was in a circle that can be found in Cricut Design Space.  Now, the desire I used is original using the Dolphin as a “cut” design, rather than a “draw” design.  I switched the design to draw, and then attached a “cut” circle of the same size immediately behind it.  When cutting out the circle, I selected a custom setting with light leather, and used a deep cut blade.  (I am going to retest it with a regular blade to see if it makes a difference, but it definitely cuts with a regular blade.  You’ll notice that the edges are a little choppy below, but the “fuzziness” falls away from the edges as you lace around the design.

The Cricut Pen words great on tracing the design, but we wanted a bit of a thicker, darker blue, so I had the Monkey help me use the drawn design to color over the dolphin with a thick royal blue marker.  To start your kiddo lacing up the design, you’ll use two binder clips to attach to the two pieces of fun foam together at either end of the design. It just helps those little fingers focus on the lacing, rather than keeping both pieces together.  Then I had my little Monkey use a large plastic needle to carefully punch holes through the fun foam, and carefully lace the two fun foam circles together.

Because he’s little, I cut a piece of craft lacing much longer than he’d need, and started him, and allowed him to finish lacing and then I knotted the lacing, and finished the pouch.  I then used a box stitch to create a little hanger, and used a lanyard hook to finish it off.  You’ll notice that I added a cut like to the top to allow a place for my Monkey to add his yummy Goldfish crackers.

The Monkey was so proud of his Goldfish Snack Pouch, and couldn’t wait to show it off to all his Dolphin friends.  Now, I want to share that I know (and you know) that this craft isn’t going to last forever because fun foam isn’t that durable.  That’s okay for us because the crafting time, and the opportunity to work on fine motor skills through the lacing and chance to munch on some yummy Goldfish crackers together was what our goal was.

So if you want to make this snack pouch last for a longer time, and survive many, many bags of Goldfish Crackers, then I would suggest that you consider using felt, which would work beautifully. That being said, it would probably become a craft for a slightly older child who is able to sew rather than lace.
